Homeopathy for Shingles

Bonjour and Thank You for Stopping By!

A couple of weeks ago, my mom called me because she was in a lot of pain. She had shingles. And if you have ever had shingles, you already know how intense it can be. The burning, itching, sensitivity, and nerve pain can be hard to ignore, and what brings relief can be surprisingly different from one person to another.

So how can homeopathy help? Let’s take a closer look at shingles and at some homeopathic remedies that may be considered depending on how the symptoms show up.

What Is Shingles?

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After chickenpox, the virus stays in the body, resting quietly in the nervous system. Years later, sometimes decades later, it can become active again.

When that happens, the virus travels along a nerve toward the skin. This is why shingles usually appears on one side of the body, often in a band or cluster of blisters.

The rash is not always the first sign. Burning, tingling, itching, tenderness, or pain can begin several days before anything appears on the skin. Once the rash develops, the blisters eventually dry and crust over. Some people may also feel tired, have a headache, fever, or sensitivity to light.

What makes shingles particularly painful is the involvement of the nerve itself. The pain may feel burning, stabbing, shooting, electric, or extremely sensitive to touch. And sometimes, even after the rash has healed, the nerve pain remains. This is known as post-herpetic neuralgia, and it becomes more common as we get older.

From a homeopathic point of view, this is where the individual picture becomes important. Two people can have the same diagnosis and experience it very differently. One may want heat, another cold. One may have intense itching, another sharp nerve pain. Those differences are what help guide the choice of remedy.

Homeopathic Remedies Considered for Shingles

Homeopathy offers gentle, individualized support during shingles. The remedies below are some of the ones homeopaths commonly consider, but the choice depends on the way the symptoms show up in each person.

1. Rhus Toxicodendron: Best known for a blistering, itchy, burning rash with restlessness. Better from warmth and movement, worse from cold and dampness.

2. Arsenicum Album: Think burning pain with anxiety, weakness, chilliness, and restlessness. Warmth usually helps, and symptoms may worsen after midnight.

3. Mezereum: More likely when the rash is crusted, cracked, oozing, or intensely itchy, especially when nerve pain continues as the skin heals.

4. Lachesis: Consider when the rash is more left-sided, dark or purplish, very sensitive to touch, and worse after sleep.

5. Ranunculus Bulbosus: Especially useful for shingles around the chest or ribs, with sharp, stabbing, or shooting pain worse from touch and movement.

6. Hypericum Perforatum: Think strong nerve pain that feels electric, shooting, or piercing, especially when the rash is improving but the pain remains.

7. Apis Mellifica: More suited to redness, swelling, heat, and stinging pain, with relief from cold applications.

Always choose a remedy based on the person’s individual symptoms, not the diagnosis alone. If you’re unsure which remedy fits, working with a qualified homeopath can help.

What About Post-Herpetic Neuralgia?

Sometimes the rash heals, but the nerve pain continues. The skin may look almost normal while the person is still dealing with burning, tingling, shooting, or electric pain.

From a homeopathic point of view, the same principle still applies: we look at the character of the pain, what makes it better or worse, how sensitive the area is, and what else is happening in the person overall.

Even after the rash is gone, the details still matter.

When Should You Seek Medical Care?

Seek prompt medical care if the rash involves the eye, face, or ear, or if there are changes in vision or hearing, facial weakness, severe headache, neurological symptoms, a widespread rash, signs of infection, or a weakened immune system.

Why Consider Homeopathy for Shingles?

Homeopathy offers a gentle, individualized approach to shingles, taking into account not only the pain and the rash, but how each person experiences them. It can also be used alongside conventional medical care when needed.

Say Oui to Homeopathy! - Shingles can be painful, and for some people the nerve pain continues even after the rash has healed.

Homeopathy offers another way to support the person by looking closely at how the symptoms are showing up and choosing a remedy that fits those individual details.

If you’re curious about this approach, working with a qualified homeopathic practitioner can help ensure the remedy is selected according to your specific symptoms and overall state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is shingles so painful?

Shingles affects the nerves as well as the skin. That is why the pain can feel burning, stabbing, shooting, electric, or unusually sensitive to touch.

Why can shingles pain continue after the rash is gone?

Sometimes the nerve remains irritated even after the skin has healed. This is called post-herpetic neuralgia and is more common as we get older.

How does a homeopath choose a remedy for shingles?

The diagnosis is only the starting point. A homeopath looks at the type of pain, the appearance and location of the rash, sensitivity to touch, and what makes the symptoms better or worse.

Is there one best homeopathic remedy for shingles?

No. The remedy that fits one person may not fit another. Burning better from heat, for example, is a very different picture from burning that feels better with cold.

Can homeopathy be used while shingles is still active?

Yes. Homeopathy may be used as complementary support during the acute stage, alongside appropriate medical care.

Can homeopathy be used for post-herpetic neuralgia?

Yes. Homeopaths also work with lingering nerve pain after shingles. The same individualized approach applies, based on how the pain feels and what affects it.

When should shingles be evaluated by a doctor?

Shingles should be medically evaluated early, especially when it involves the face, eye, or ear, or when there are changes in vision or hearing, facial weakness, neurological symptoms, or a widespread rash.
