Cyclospora: What You Need to Know About This Summer's Foodborne Illness

Updated: Jul 3

Bonjour, and thank you for stopping by!

As you know by now, summer is one of my favorite times of year.  Farmers' markets are full of fresh fruits and vegetables, and family barbecues, picnics, and fresh salads are daily routine.

From times to times, those same foods become linked to foodborne illnesses.  This summer, one of the names making headlines is Cyclospora. If you've never heard of it before, you're not alone. Most people haven't.  It has caused outbreaks across the United States and can cause digestive symptoms that linger for weeks.

Let's take a closer look at what Cyclospora is, the symptoms to watch for, and how I think homeopathy can help.

What Is Cyclospora?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, commonly known as Cyclospora. People become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite, and the illness is not usually life-threatening.

Although Cyclospora is found worldwide, it's more common in tropical and subtropical regions. In the United States, outbreaks have been linked to fresh produce, including leafy greens, herbs, berries, and other fruits and vegetables. At the time I'm writing this article, however, the CDC is still investigating the current outbreak, and the exact source has not yet been identified.

Another interesting fact is that having Cyclospora once doesn't provide lasting immunity, so it's possible to become infected more than once, and one of the reasons Cyclospora can be difficult to trace is that symptoms usually don't appear until 2 to 14 days after exposure. By then, most people have long forgotten what they ate the week before.

What Are the Symptoms?

Not very pleasant! The most common symptom is watery diarrhea, but people may also experience:

  • Abdominal cramping

  • Bloating

  • Nausea

  • Loss of appetite

  • Fatigue

  • Weight loss

  • Low-grade fever

Note that the illness can linger. Some people begin to feel better, only to have the diarrhea and fatigue return again. Without appropriate treatment, symptoms may last for several weeks.

Can Homeopathy Help?

Yes, homeopathy is incredible during an acute illness.  Homeopathic remedies are selected according to the individual's symptoms. That's why two people with the same stomach illness may need completely different remedies.

Homeopathic Remedies to Consider for Acute Diarrhea and Digestive Upset

There are several remedies that homeopaths commonly consider during acute digestive illnesses.

Arsenicum album: This is one of the first remedies I think about when digestive symptoms begin after eating questionable food.  The person may have burning pains, vomiting or diarrhea, great weakness, anxiety, restlessness, and a desire to sip small amounts of water frequently.

Podophyllum: I think of this remedy for profuse, explosive, watery diarrhea that may be worse in the morning. Despite the amount of diarrhea, there is often surprisingly little pain, but the person may feel extremely weak afterward.

Aloe socotrina: A good remedy to think about when there is marked urgency. The person may feel as though they won't make it to the bathroom in time and may notice loud gurgling in the abdomen before a loose stool.

Veratrum album: This remedy is considered when diarrhea is accompanied by severe vomiting, cold sweats, collapse, and profound weakness. Because these symptoms can lead to dehydration, prompt medical evaluation is important.

Nux vomica

A classic remedy after overindulgence in rich food or alcohol. It may also be helpful when there is nausea, cramping, frequent urging, and the sensation that the bowel never completely empties.

China officinalis (Cinchona): One of my favorite remedies after significant fluid loss. It is commonly considered when someone feels completely exhausted, weak, bloated, and depleted following prolonged diarrhea.

Carbo vegetabilis: Often considered when someone feels profoundly weak, bloated, and chilly after a digestive illness. They may crave fresh air, feel faint, and have significant gas and abdominal distention.

A quick reminder: Homeopathy is highly individualized, so these remedies are not prescribed simply because someone has diarrhea. Two people with the same illness may need completely different remedies based on how they are experiencing it.

If you're building a home remedy kit, I generally recommend keeping these remedies in a 9C or 30C potency, as they can be useful for many common acute digestive illnesses.

A Few Simple Ways to Support Recovery

Whether you're recovering from Cyclospora or another digestive illness, remember to:

  • Stay well hydrated.

  • Replace electrolytes if recommended by your healthcare provider.

  • Eat simple, easy-to-digest foods as your appetite returns.

  • Give your body time to rest.

When Should You Seek Medical Care?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), many people with healthy immune systems will eventually recover from Cyclospora without treatment. However, the illness can last for several weeks, and symptoms may improve only to return again.

Because Cyclospora is caused by a parasite rather than a virus, medical treatment may be recommended in some cases.

You should contact your healthcare provider if you:

  • Are unable to keep fluids down.

  • Develop signs of dehydration (such as dizziness, dry mouth, or decreased urination).

  • Have bloody diarrhea or a high fever.

  • Have severe symptoms or diarrhea that isn't improving after several days.

Young children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems should seek medical advice sooner, as they may be at greater risk of complications.

When in doubt, it's always appropriate to check in with your healthcare provider.

Before You Go - Digestive illnesses are never pleasant, but being prepared can make them a little less overwhelming. Understanding the symptoms, knowing when to seek medical care, and having a few well-chosen homeopathic remedies on hand can help you feel more confident if illness strikes.

If you need guidance selecting the right homeopathic remedy during an acute illness, I'm here to help.
