Homeopathic Remedies for Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke

Bonjour, and thank you for stopping by!

My kids are at summer camp right now, so they're outside all day running, swimming, playing sports, and having fun with their friends.

Every morning before they leave, they hear the same reminder: "Drink water!... Drink water!... Drink water!"  Can you relate?

Of course, once they're busy playing, that's probably the last thing they're thinking about. but children can become overheated much faster than they realize. By the time they stop to tell you they're thirsty or tired, the heat may have already caught up with them.

So how do you know when it's just a hot afternoon, and when it's something more serious?

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion develops when the body can no longer cool itself properly. It usually happens after spending too much time in the heat, especially when a child hasn't had enough to drink.

Watch for:

  • Heavy sweating

  • Cool, pale, or clammy skin

  • Feeling unusually tired or weak

  • Headache

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Muscle cramps

  • Dizziness or feeling faint

Most children recover quickly once they're moved into the shade or air conditioning, encouraged to rest, and given fluids. The key is catching it early. Left untreated, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke.

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is different, and it's an emergency.

Watch for:

  • A body temperature of 103°F (39.4°C) or higher

  • Hot, red skin

  • Confusion or unusual behavior

  • Difficulty speaking

  • Loss of consciousness

If you suspect heat stroke, don't wait. Call emergency services immediately. Heat stroke requires immediate medical attention.

Don't Forget About Dehydration

Children become dehydrated much faster than adults, especially when they're busy running around and forget to stop for a drink.

Watch for:

  • Dry lips or mouth

  • Less frequent urination or fewer wet diapers

  • Dark yellow urine

  • Fatigue

  • Irritability

  • Sunken eyes

  • In babies, a sunken soft spot (fontanelle)

Common Homeopathic Remedies

Every homeopathic prescription is based on the individual's unique symptom picture. Here are a few remedies that may be considered when heat exposure produces these characteristic symptoms.

Belladonna comes to mind when heat exposure is followed by a flushed, burning-hot face, a throbbing headache, and a sudden high fever.

Glonoinum is a well-known remedy for the effects of excessive heat and sun exposure, especially when there's a pounding headache that feels worse from the heat.

Apis mellifica may be considered when a heat rash burns, stings, or prickles and feels better with cool applications.

Natrum carbonicum is one of my favorite remedies for people who don't tolerate the heat well. They become exhausted after spending time in the sun and seem much more affected by hot weather than everyone else.

Veratrum album may be considered in severe cases of heat exhaustion when there's collapse, cold perspiration, and extreme weakness.

Staying Cool

A few things I always keep in mind during the summer:

  • Make sure your child drinks water before they get thirsty.

  • Dress them in lightweight clothing.

  • Plan outdoor activities earlier in the morning or later in the evening when possible.

  • Take breaks in the shade or head indoors when it's especially hot.

  • Keep a close eye on babies and young children. They overheat much more quickly than adults.

  • If your child tells you they feel dizzy, weak, or "just don't feel right," don't brush it off. Have them stop, cool down, and drink some water.

A Cell Salt Tip for Summer

During the summer, I like using the 12-cell salt combination for both children and adults, especially if they're spending a lot of time outdoors.

Schüßler cell salts are used to help support the body's natural mineral balance. During periods of heat, sports, summer camps, beach days, or other outdoor activities, I find they make a nice addition to a family's wellness routine. At home, I drop a few tablets into my kids' water bottles before they head off to camp. They dissolve on their own, and the kids sip on them throughout the day without giving it a second thought.

Before You Go - Heat-related illnesses can become serious much faster than many people realize. Knowing what to watch for and recognizing when it's time to cool down can make all the difference. For those who struggle with the heat year after year, constitutional homeopathic care may help address that underlying tendency.

I hope this helps you and your family enjoy the rest of your summer safely.

À votre santé!
