Bonjour and merci for stopping by!
When people first discover homeopathy, they often reach for combination remedies. These are easy to find in stores, clearly labeled, and simple to use. For many, they’re a gentle and approachable way to get started with homeopathy.
As people start learning more, a common question comes up: What’s the difference between combination remedies and single, individualized remedies?
Â
What Are Combination Remedies?
Combination remedies contain more than one homeopathic medicine in a single product. They’re usually created for a group of symptoms or a common condition — for example, colds, coughs, or sinus congestion. Products like ColdCalm®, SinusCalm®, or Chestal® are typical examples of combination remedies.
These remedies are great for short-term or acute situations. They’re convenient, easy to use, and don’t usually require a full consultation — although sometimes acute issues can become more complicated, and that’s when the guidance of a homeopath can be very helpful. We also offer low-cost acute consultations to support families in these situations. Click here to schedule an acute consultation: https://www.thefrenchhomeopath.com/services-1
As a classically trained homeopath, I genuinely appreciate combination remedies. I often recommend them for families with young children, because kids can have a hard time explaining exactly what’s bothering them. I pack a few in my children’s suitcases for summer camp, and I always bring some when I travel — it’s just easier than carrying a full homeopathic kit! They’re a great way to support minor, everyday issues.
Pharmacies, like Boiron, carefully research and formulate these products to cover the most commonly experienced symptoms. They are usually made in lower potencies, which makes them very safe.
Helpful Combination Remedies

What Are Individual (Single) Remedies?
Individual remedies are used one at a time, chosen for the whole person, not just the condition. In classical homeopathy, a remedy is selected by looking at:
Physical symptoms
Emotional patterns
Triggers and how symptoms change
Using a single remedy allows you (or a practitioner) to clearly see how the body responds. In deeper or chronic situations, this careful observation is important. Multiple remedies at once can make it harder to tell what is helping and what may need adjustment.

Combination remedies are helpful in certain situations, but they are different from individualized homeopathic care. Knowing the difference helps you use homeopathy thoughtfully and with realistic expectations. If you’d like to understand how homeopathy approaches acute versus chronic situations, you can read more on my blog here: https://www.thefrenchhomeopath.com/post/acute-or-chronic-prescribing-umm-what-do-i-need
