Can I eat this or that while following a homeopathic treatment?

Updated: Aug 15

Bonjour and Merci for stopping by!

Clients often ask whether they should avoid certain foods while I am treating them homeopathically.  Coffee, tea, mint, garlic, onion, and alcohol are the most common substances people are worried about. In this article, I will clear up some of the confusion so that you can feel confident about what you should and should not drink or eat while healing yourself holistically.

As a general rule, I direct my clients to place their Homeopathic remedies under the tongue, which enables the globules to be absorbed in the oral cavity.  So as to avoid interference with the absorption of the remedies, I suggest avoiding strong foods, tastes, and fragrances within the same time frame as the remedy. In my experience, you will successfully absorb the remedy as long as you leave a 15-30 minute gap between remedy placement under the tongue and the food or drink you are considering.

You will be happy to learn that there are generally no food restrictions during treatment so long as you follow the 15-30 minute waiting period before and after taking your homeopathic remedy. However, there are exceptions for certain conditions, and as always, every patient and every presentation is unique, so our  consultation will be essential in giving you the particular instructions you need for your situation.

For certain medical conditions, consumption of common foods can exacerbate the intensity of the disease, whether by altering body chemistry, or by causing inflammation. For those cases, I would recommend observing specific dietary precautions until the patient begins to notice improvement from the homeopathic treatment I have recommended.  A few basic examples of this could be as follows:

- If you are suffering from elevated blood pressures, I would want you to lower salt intake.

- If you are suffering from Hepatitis C, I would request that you avoid fried foods.

General Food Guidelines Based on Health Conditions

To help give you a general idea about what you may expect regarding food restrictions in certain scenarios, I have listed some guidelines below; however, the list is not meant to replace our one-on -one consultation at which time I will review your specific presentation, history and concerns.

While following a homeopathic treatment, the following guidelines will generally apply for food restrictions:

For Skin Disorders:

Avoid Spicy foods (to control itching and burning), artificially flavored foods, and non-vegetarian foods .

Vitiligo: Avoid unripe fruits, sour fruits, sour curds, and marine products like fish.

Urticaria (Hives): Avoid known irritants, spicy foods, and artificially treated foods.

Psoriasis: Avoid spicy, pungent foods, and non-vegetarian food.

For Gastrointestinal Disorders (e.g., Gastritis, Ulcers, IBS, Ulcerative Colitis):  Avoid spicy, pungent foods, tobacco, deep-fried foods, and irregular eating habits.

Ulcerative Colitis: During symptom-free periods, the diet can be similar to a general healthy diet, but always avoid alcohol, excessive fruits, and spicy foods where possible. During flare-ups, reduce high-fiber foods and limit fats to prevent symptoms from worsening.

Urinary System Disorders (e.g., Recurrent Infections, Kidney Stones):

Avoid certain vegetables like tomatoes and brinjal, alcohol, aerated drinks, and red meat.

Hypertension: Avoid salty foods (e.g., pickles, salted snacks), deep-fried foods, and alcohol.

Diabetes: Avoid sugary foods and fruits like mangoes and chikoo, as well as deep-fried foods and heavy meals.

Nephrotic (kidney) Syndrome:

General Guidelines: Ensure adequate protein intake (about 1 gm per kg of body weight) to replace lost protein, but avoid excess protein to prevent kidney damage. Sodium and fat intake should be low.

Foods to eat: Skimmed milk, yogurt, legumes, eggs, fish, chicken, vegetables, and fruits. Ensure low-sodium soups, sauces, and snacks.

Foods to avoid: Excessive protein, high-fat foods, salty snacks, processed foods, and foods high in sodium like salted chips, pickles, canned meats, and foods containing preservatives.

Ulcerative Colitis (UC):

When symptom-free: A balanced diet with carbohydrates (e.g., rice, bread), proteins (e.g., pulses, meat, eggs), and fruits and vegetables is ideal. Moderate fat intake is recommended.

During flare-ups: Avoid high-fiber foods, processed foods, and excess sugar and artificial sweeteners. Limit spicy foods, alcohol, and deep-fried foods. Use bulking agents or stool softeners if necessary, and replace high-fat foods with protein- and carbohydrate-rich foods.

Additional tips: Dairy should be consumed in moderation, and low-lactose or soy milk can be used if needed. Supplements of multivitamins and iron may be beneficial during active inflammation.

The right diet during homeopathic treatment can depend on your specific health condition. It’s important to work with a homeopath/naturopath to tailor your diet to support your treatment while addressing any underlying health concerns.

I am looking forward to working together with you to restore you to optimal health, function and well being.

A votre Santé!
